FEBRUARY:
This time of year we dig out the pathways – last year’s woodchip makes amazing compost – and replace them with new woodchip. We’ve just taken a delivery of some lovely fresh maple chip and at the weekend we began digging. We are always accompanied by some feathered friends when we do this job – the ducks love searching for worms and grubs in the freshly dug compost. The compost is then barrowed to be spread around shrubs and trees in the garden to help improve our poor soil. Sandy soil is great for drainage (no puddles in our campsite!) but not so good for plants so they need all the help they can get. Luckily we produce a lot of compost – not only the previous year’s pathways but also the duck and chicken waste as well as the food waste from the campsite. Our morning trips to the Treebog are accompanied by almost deafening birdsong, the river Alde is alive with the sound of moorhens splashing about, and we had our first duck egg yesterday – so spring is definitely on it’s way!
